With all of the hikes I have been on, one of my biggest concerns is trying to head off pain that will come later. I suffer from chronic pain, but I also happen to be a bigger structured person and this means my thighs and other areas tend to rub and this can lead to some serious chafing later. I affectionately call it ‘chub rub’. If you have it happen to you, you know exactly how painful it can be. I don’t want it to stop my fun, though, so I came up with this skin soothing DIY chafing salve for when I experience it.

If you want, too, you can add some zinc oxide powder to this (I am not exactly sure on the exact amount as I have not made it with that ingredient) so it can help you heal faster as well. Zinc oxide is the main ingredient found in baby diaper rash cream and it’s amazing for healing severely chapped skin.

This salve is great though because it has the skin soothing power of chamomile and lavender as well as moisturizers and the corn starch in it helps actually dry out the weeping skin that sometimes happens with these (clears throat) chafed situations. And, it only takes a few minutes to make and starts to thicken within minutes.

Use this Skin Soothing DIY Chafing Salve on:

Wind burns

Inner Thighs

Skin Folds

Anywhere that needs some soothing, but only externally

It is safe for Kids 1 and up, but should not be used as a diaper rash cream.

To Make Skin Soothing DIY Chafing Salve you will need:

1 Cup Coconut Oil

1/4 Cup Shea Butter

1/3 Cups grated (or pastille) Beeswax

20 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

35 Drops Chamomile Essential Oil

1/2 Heaping cup Cornstarch

Directions to make Skin Soothing DIY Chafing Salve:

  1. Melt the coconut oil and Shea butter in a double boiler on medium/hot heat. I like to use a mason jar and an old pot filled about halfway full. The shea butter will melt slower than the coconut oil. This is completely normal. When they are both melted completely, add in your essential oils.
  2. Carefully, with a potholder, remove your jar from the heat and pour it into a heat proof bowl. Add in your cornstarch. Fold in the cornstarch. Using an immersion blender, gently blend the ingredients together, whipping them until smooth, about 30 seconds.
  3. Taking a spatula, fold the salve until it looks even. Quickly, before it completely cools, place it in a container. If you want to put it in a tube, you can immerse it into the solution and suck it up into it. You can also just store it in a shallow mason jar with a lid.
  4. If its warm out, such as during the summer, store it in the fridge.

To use, apply some to the affected areas. Allow to absorb. Apply as often as desired.
