How many times have you thought about going on a road trip only to change your mind after calculating the cost of gas? Thinking about the outrageous price of gas can put a real damper on any trip. Don’t give up all hope of taking an adventure. Check out these tips on how to save money on gas.

How to Save Money on Gas for Road Trips

  1. Use GasBuddy. This free app allows you to check the closest gas stations for the cheapest price. You can also sign up to get a card you can link to your checking account. If you use the card, you can save an estimated 5% on every fill-up. Not to mention, you can track gas prices as you stop giving you points towards free gas. This is worth the download!
  2. Drive slower. It has been proven that when you drive slower, you use less gas. Having a lead foot is going to cost you a pretty penny. If you just can’t lay off the gas pedal, use your cruise control to help you maintain a speed of around 55 miles per hour for the best gas mileage.
  3. Check the date. Gas prices tend to rise on the weekends, around holidays, and during summer months. If you can fill up before gas prices jump, you are going to save quite a bit on gas.
  4. Double your gas fills up with a grocery store. Places like Kroger, Fred Meyer, Safeway and Albertson’s offer gas points for every dollar you spend on food. Instead of buying fast food, get your snacks from a grocery store that offers gas points for a percentage off your gas.
  5. Always fill up. Keeping your gas tank full at all times actually makes you use less gas. With less room for air and water, your gas burns slower the more you have in the tank. So instead of putting in a $20, just fill it up.
