How to Save Money on Bus Travel- Traveling by bus can be a super economical way to get around if you have the time. Here's our tips for saving money on bus fares.

I went on a trip just 4 hours away on the bus a couple of months ago to my hometown. I bought the tickets kind of last minute and found that they were decently reasonable in price, however, buying any travel thing last minute often doesn’t work in your favor quite like buying with more time. Here are some of my tips for saving money on bus travel as it can actually be cheaper than driving in many cases if you know how to get cheaper fares!

Buy in advance– I gt my ticket for around $50 (one way) last minute, but when I priced it out a week or two in advance, it was less than half that price. If you can be flexible with your travel dates, I highly suggest you price in advance for the biggest savings.

Look for promo codes online– There are often promo codes available for Greyhound Bus fares. All you have to do is a little Googling. Simply put the month and year in + greyhound bus discount codes (or megabus codes or whatever you are looking for. This pretty much works for anything). For instance, I would put in “May 2017 Greyhound Bus Discount Codes”.

Use the discounts that the bus company offers– The largest bus company, Greyhound, offers many discounts every day. These include a discount for students of 10%, Active duty or retired military also get 10%. Seniors get 5% as well. If you will be traveling with a large group, you can even get a discount if your group is 10 or more.

Join rewards programsRoad Rewards, the discount and loyalty program for Greyhound lets you earn discounts and even free bus tickets if you travel with them often. Just for signing up, you get 10% off your next trip with a discount code you can use right away. It’s worth signing up even if you just need a discount right now.

Time your trip midweek– Many bus companies charge cheaper rates if you travel mid-week because these are their slower times. If you can you might even be able to save up to 40% this way and enjoy a less crowded bus, too.

Consider using a smaller bus company for a large metro area– Some of the larger metro areas like Washington DC and New York have buses that just take people between other metropolitan areas. They do this usually for far less than a taxi, so if you want to go do some urban hopping, make sure you check these buses out. Some are as low as $10- $20 one way!
