How to Find the Best Hiking Trails- Got the hiking itch and not sure where to go? Here are the best ways to find the best hiking trails in your area.

I love to hike. I am not an expert, though. Because of this, I often don’t know where to go to find the best trails that fit my level, especially if I am not near where I live. Ideally, I would love to hike all over the world at some point, but that means figuring out where to go, first. In order to find the best hiking trails, I have found the following ways.

How to Find the Best Hiking Trails

Ask the locals– The locals know about the truly sweet spots. Sometimes, they will even give up their coveted ‘secret’ spots in order to share the beauty. If you are new in town, try asking a few local people where they like to go hiking in the area. Make sure you get directions on how to get there and ask the questions you will need to know such as skill level, distance, etc.

Check out websites– There are websites dedicated to helping you find the hiking areas and trails in your area or current location. I like to use AllTrails.com because they have an app and I think they have a very good, easy to use interface.

Pick up local tourist guides– Most cities or counties make a tourist guide or two, often put out by the Chamber of Commerce or the local independent newspaper that will tell you about the highlights in the are and this often includes an entire section on stuff to do outdoors. While those listed in these kinds of publications are probably well known to locals, they can also be great for beginner or intermediate level hikers like myself and they are usually easier to find. These publications can usually be found at restaurants, malls, hotel lobbies/rooms and the Chamber of Commerce.

Stop in at local outdoor gear stores– If the city you are in has an REI, go there and ask the staff or even other customers where they like to go. You are sure to gets some interesting answers and find some real local treasures.
