5 Ways to Save Money on Fall Travel

Traveling season may be winding down for most folks, but for others, this is the best time of year to travel! The weather is still nice here in the Pacific Northwest and I say it is still a good time to get out and see stuff.

Not only will you find milder temperatures during the autumn moths, but who can ignore nature’s splendor with all the trees showing us their true colors?

If you are looking to save money on traveling this time of year, in the PNW or elsewhere, here are some tips on ways to save money on traveling this fall.

5 Ways to Save Money on Traveling this Fall

Look at discount websites such as Orbitz, Travelocity or even Groupon.

Did you know Groupon has a travel section on their site? You can find great local deals on resorts, travel stops, restaurants, hotels and more just by looking on the site. This is the perfect time to look locally, especially if you live in an area like I do that gets cold and tourist season almost stops as these places are offering deep discounts to scoop up last minute travelers. This brings me to my next tip…

Stay close to home.

If you don’t travel far, you usually won’t spend as much. Play tourist in your own area and you could even itch that travel bug by doing just a day trip or an over night one. Is there a state park not far that you have been wanting tio visit”? How about a small town that has some quirky and fun things to do? Play tourist in your area and you won’t need to spend much.

Don’t travel on holidays or near them.

This seems like common sense, but airlines and hotels raise rates around the holidays to gouge people who are coming to town to visit relatives. If you can, don’t travel near Halloween or Thanksgiving. Instead, stick with the first or 2nd week in November or October.

Additionally, skip weekends if you can. Traveling on a Tuesday, Wednesday or even a Thursday usually costs less.

Book a Hotel with a mini-fridge or Kitchenette.

Since rats on hotels are going down this time of year, you may be able to afford a room with a few luxuries. If it’s not too much of a price difference, get a room with a mini-fridge and/or a kitchenette. You will save a lot of money on your trip if you don’t eat out every meal. Instead, think of a few family favorites to make on the road!

Pay attention to dates.

Sometimes, “Summer rates” continue through then end of November or October for certain things like Zoos, amusement parks and other attractions. Try to find things to do that are not in the summer rates so you don’t end up paying just as much as you would during peak travel time. Also, paying attention to dates allows you to know what will even be open when you get there so you won’t be in a world of disappointment.
